What to have in your winter car kit

If you get stranded in the cold, here's what experts says you should have with you.

It's the time of year when Minnesota drivers cross their fingers and hope that their car starts... and then keeps running.

As the temperatures plunge dangerously low, the odds of a mechanical breakdown or sliding into a ditch rise dramatically. If either happens, your future self will be thankful to have an emergency car kit handy.

Here's what you should pack in your vehicle in case of a winter emergency.

  • A snow brush, ice scraper and shovel
  • Flashlight
  • Blankets
  • Map
  • Boots, mittens and extra warm clothes
  • Bottled water and snacks
  • First aid kit
  • Cellphone charger

In case you get stuck in the snow or your car breaks down, these additional items will be useful.

  • Sandbags or kitty litter for traction if you get stuck in snow
  • Tow rope
  • Tire chains or snow tires
  • Flares or reflective triangle
  • Jumper cables
