MINNEAPOLIS — We asked three couples what was on the menu for their Valentine's Day Brunch at Good Day Cafe in Saint Louis Park.
We posed a question, some food for thought. Then we left them to talk about the answers and enjoy their meal.
Marilyn and Michael Dorsey: Married 34 years
What was the appetizer of your relationship?
Marilyn: So what was the appetizer, honey?
Michael: I always say the appetizer was just how I would see you across the corner. Your appearance was appetizing haha. The opportunity came when we were introduced.
Marilyn: I’ll say you are a really good cook and you would invite me over.
Michael: So it was the food?
Marilyn: It was the food. And the looks.
What is the main course?
Michael: I would have to say the main course is our family.
Marilyn: Yeah, the family, the kids. And we still enjoy being around each other.
Michael: Another aspect of the main course for me is that I can't imagine having another meal haha.... I can’t imagine having another meal.
Marilyn: Right, right.
Michael: That’s it. You’re stuck. It’s over.
What is dessert?
Michael: Let me think about that one for a while and give a TV-appropriate answer.
Marilyn: Right, right.
Michael: I would say dessert is the time we had pre-COVID. We were traveling all over the world to 29 countries and six continents. I don't know how many cities we saw. Just kind of doing whatever we wanted. That was one dessert I can think of.
Marilyn: And the kids are gone so it’s just us.
Michael: There’s that dessert too.
Andrew and Renee Corbo: Married 7 years
What was the appetizer of your relationship?
Renee: The appetizer, the beginning! It was fun! We met at Stella’s in Uptown. May she rest in peace.
Andrew: A word that comes to mind is excitement. Especially the first conversation that we had, I was really excited getting to know you more. Also a little nervous, but in a good way.
Renee: Like an appetizer, you’re always looking forward to more.
What is the main course?
Renee: The main course? Why are we still in love today dear?
Andrew: You’re asking me to go first? Well, it's always something new with us, whether it's taking care of our child or doing the parent life or just going out on dates and still trying new restaurants.
Renee: Going up north, going on trips. Seeing our family in Florida.
Andrew: Just being with you every single day. I do love it.
What is dessert?
Renee: I think the dessert of our relationship is at the end of the night. It's just us two, because sometimes it's just super chaotic throughout the day.
Andrew: I would agree. Yeah, I love that moment. I cherish that every day.
Dennis and Mari-Ellen Bobel: Married 47 years
What was the appetizer of your relationship?
Mari-Ellen: The appetizer was when we met each other in the dorm room. Right?
Dennis: I remember your smile from the first day you stood in my dorm room doorway. And that smile hasn't changed in the last 50 years.
Mari-Ellen: And I’m going to cry because I always do.
What is the main course?
Mari-Ellen: I think the most important part of our relationship and should be every relationship is our family.
Dennis: Raising our three boys.
Mari-Ellen: And now they have lives of their own. And now we get to go visit them.
Dennis: I couldn't agree more with you, just the time of just watching our children grow into adults.
What is dessert?
Dennis: To me dessert is neither of us having to work and being able to do whatever we want together.
Mari-Ellen: Just being retired and living your life every day and doing what we want to do.
Dennis: Yeah, and our grandchild. Hopefully more.
Mari-Ellen: Just enjoying our family more because it means the most.
