BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. — An elderly woman has died after being hit by a vehicle in a grocery store parking lot in Brooklyn Park.

Police say the incident happened at Cub Foods at 7555 West Broadway just after 9 a.m. on Sept. 16. Squads were dispatched on reports of an injury accident between a vehicle and a pedestrian.

When officers arrived they found a 79-year-old woman who was conscious and alert, but suffering from a head injury. The victim was rushed to a local hospital.

The driver of the vehicle that hit the woman was cooperative and remained on scene. A subsequent investigation determined no charges would be filed against that driver.

Two days later the Hennepin County Medical Examiner reported that the woman struck by the vehicle had passed away as a result of her head injury.

Fatal pedestrian accidents aren't rare. In 2018 nearly 6,000 people died in the U.S. while on foot, and the elderly are most at risk. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that those over age 65 account for around 20 percent of pedestrian fatalities.
