Rescue crews evacuate injured 9-year-old from BWCA wilderness

Sheriff Pat Eliasen says the Cook County Search and Rescue team and Gunflint Fire Department volunteers brought the boy out around 11 p.m. Tuesday.

COOK COUNTY, Minn. — A 9-year-old paddler injured during Tuesday's severe storms is recovering after being rescued from the BWCA wilderness.

Sheriff Pat Eliasen told KARE 11 that the Cook County Search and Rescue team and volunteers from the Gunflint Fire Department responded after a tree fell on a campsite and injured the boy, causing a reported head injury.

The Cook County Sheriff's Office reported late Tuesday that the child was in a tent when the tree fell as storms were passing through the area. Eliasen said rescuers reached the campsite and brought the boy out around 11 p.m. He was transported to North Shore Health for evaluation and treatment.

At this time there is no word on the young victim's condition.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
