Wunderbar! Nonstop flights from MSP to Frankfurt start Tuesday

Lufthansa will embark on its first flight from MSP to Frankfurt Tuesday, preceded by a gathering offering accordion music and German-inspired treats.

MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota travelers have a new option when it comes to trans-Atlantic air travel, thanks to a newly launched, year-round flight route to Deutschland.

Germany's national airline, Lufthansa, will take its maiden flight from MSP to Frankfurt Tuesday at 3:05 p.m., preceded by a celebratory gathering of airport and airline officials, including Greater MSP CEO Peter Frosch.

According to the carrier, this is its first-ever service from Minnesota. Lufthansa becomes the 19th airline to operate out of MSP, and officials said the new service aims to meet the needs of "high demand from MSP to European destinations."

The pre-flight celebration also includes a performance at the gate by accordionist Ryan Charles Cihlar and German-inspired snacks. Shortly after the plane departs, the airport said a ribbon-cutting ceremony will commence at the gate.

When plans for the new route were announced last fall, CEO of the Metropolitan Airport Commission (MAC), Brian Ryks, called the news "exciting."

"We're thrilled to welcome Lufthansa and the airline's stellar reputation as a premium global carrier," Ryks said in a statement. "It's exciting to see this new service that will support the increased year-round demand for air travel from Minnesota and the upper Midwest to Europe and other international destinations."
