Xcel Energy crews place sandbags at Burnsville plant as Minnesota River levels rise

Xcel officials say they will continue to generate electricity at the Black Dog plant this weekend and do not anticipate any impact to operations or electric service.

BURNSVILLE, Minn — While water levels have remained high across much of southern Minnesota, areas of the metro are also seeing their own issues with water.

At Xcel Energy's Black Dog Generating Station, situated between the Minnesota River and Black Dog Lake, rising water levels have forced precautionary measures.

Outside the front entrance Thursday, crews were hard at work placing massive sandbags to stop incoming water. That water is expected to crest this weekend, according to Xcel officials.

Scores of sandbags now complement already existing measures, like berms and structural walls. The flow of water is now so high that the entrance to the facility is occupied by a boat.

Xcel officials say they will continue to generate electricity this weekend and do not anticipate any impact to operations or customers' electric service.
