MINNEAPOLIS — Beloved Lucy Laney Elementary School principal Mauri Friestleben has announced she has taken a job as principal of North Minneapolis High School.
During her time as principal of Lucy Laney Elementary, Friestleben helped reverse the school's negative trend of student suspensions, and set the school toward a trajectory to get off Minnesota's failing schools list.
'Love Them First,' a documentary by KARE 11's Ben Garvin and Lindsey Seavert, gives us a window into a world that many do not see - a world that Friestleben and other North Minneapolis community members dealt with on a regular basis.
The documentary is honest about the struggles facing the community and the school, but finds its heart in the strength of its children, and the many people working to make a difference.
