Millennial women are 'worried,' 'ashamed' of out-earning male partners, report says

KARE 11's Adrienne Broaddus and Ferlon Webster tried to get to the bottom of this surprising study.

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - A 2017 report that found millennial women "ashamed" and "worried" by earning more than their male partners is making the rounds again.

By contrast, KARE 11 spoke with four millennials – married and dating – who disagreed.

“Go after the work you want. If you want to make more money, make more money!” 22-year-old Marta Balsimo said. “I don’t think money really matters the way that people think it does.

Balsimo earns more money than her boyfriend. Both work in the foodservice industry.

“As long as he has enough money to pay rent when it is due I really don’t care,” she said.

Katie Winter, a married 30-year-old, said her husband earns more than she does but there is room for growth.

“I still have a really driven career but it is nice to not have to be super competitive in my job. I am able to do what I want,” she said.

Emmanuel Mauleon, whose girlfriends earns more than he does, said it is time for society to defeat cultural norms.

“She has been working in a career for ten years so if she didn't make any more money than I would think that would be a problem,” he said. “There are different ways to provide for the family. If (women) feel embarrassed, reflect on where it comes from. Is it society telling you he is supposed to be the breadwinner? If a woman is making more money than her partner that is helping the relationship.”
