Minnesota farmers scramble for propane

Farmers are in need of propane to dry their crops.

BIRD ISLAND, Minn. — The late harvest continues near Bird Island.

Wet corn is harvested and transported back to the farm.

"Twenty thousand bushels of wet corn," said farmer George Elfering. "Filling the auger to fill the drier."

Elfering is keeping an eye on his drier.

"Drier runs 24 hours a day," Elfering said. "We're burning about 1400 gallons of propane a day."

That is the next challenge for farmers after a cold spring and late planting. Now they're dealing with the high demand for propane to dry all those crops.

George ran out of propane Tuesday night.

"We lost about 6 hours of harvest when we ran out," said Elfering.

He got another shipment Wednesday morning.

Propane is being shipped into Minnesota at record rates, but it's hard to keep up with demand.

Gas is needed for crop drying and also heating homes and farms.

There are long lines to fill up, so trucks are forced to drive out of state to get it.

"There's a 10 hour wait in line," said Elfering.

Elfering still has hundreds of acres left to harvest so this just adds to the woes of Minnesota farmers.

"Definitely been a long year," said Elfering.
