CASS LAKE, Minn. — A Minnesota woman reeled in an unusual prize Saturday in Cass Lake - a blue-tinted perch.
Brandi Larson, of Pequot Lakes, was fishing on Pike Bay Lake on Saturday over the holiday weekend, when she caught the "one in a million" perch.
Two DNR fisheries biologists confirmed to KARE 11 that there can be "blue" perch like this one.
"The blue is nothing more than a color phase, which is caused by a blue tinted protein in the fish’s skin mucus," a DNR spokesperson said. "This can happen to walleye, too, which are part of the perch family."
There was another "blue" perch caught on Cass Lake in 2011, according to the DNR.
As for Larson, she kept the beautiful perch and says she is having it mounted.
"The fish is so beautiful that I feel that all MN fishing lovers need to see," she told KARE 11.
