2 Minnesotans killed in Ohio Turnpike crashes

A 46-year-old man and 9-year-old boy from Minnesota were among the dead in a series of crashes on the Ohio Turnpike on Thursday morning.

LUCAS COUNTY, Ohio — Two people from Minneapolis are among the dead following a series of deadly crashes on the Ohio Turnpike on Thursday morning.

The Lucas County, Ohio Coroner's Office identified the Minnesota victims as Tenzin Drukgyal, 46, and Dawa Norbu, 9.

Four people died in three crashes involving 12 vehicles over a one-hour span early Thursday morning, closing down a 15-mile stretch of the Ohio Turnpike near Toledo. At least ten others were injured.

One of the crashes led to a spill of sulfuric acid and caused a hazmat situation.

Police have arrested and charged a 24-year-old man from Philadelphia with aggravated vehicular homicide; vehicular manslaughter: negligently, a second-degree misdemeanor in connection with the crashes, although it's not yet clear if he was involved with the crash that killed the two people from Minnesota. According to charging documents, the man was operating a commercial vehicle and struck stopped traffic "while failing to maintain assured clear distance ahead."

The National Transportation Safety Board is now investigating the crashes.
