New sports drink for kids offers healthier option

A mom of three was so fed up with sugary sports drinks her kids were drinking that she decided to make her own.

OREGON - Velana Colón is on a mission to transform the sports drink aisle. After watching her kids drink sugary sports drink, she grew frustrated.

"It really bothers me that the whole reason our kids are out on fields and playing is for better health, so when your kid drinks a sports drink that's not healthy, you've just gone and undone all that hard work," Colon explained.

So, she developed a healthy, organic sports drink for kids.

The drink is called K Plus, and it's starting to hit stores in Oregon and California.

"The K stands for kids, the plus is how they're going to perform when they're not slowed down by artificial dyes and chemicals and too much sugar," Colón said.

Colón started with coconut water, and then played around with mixing in organic cane sugar, potassium for electrolytes and purified sea salt.

When her kids loved it, she knew she had something. So, she hired a professional food lab to get the formula perfect - and certified organic.

K Plus has just 14 grams of sugar, which is less than half found in the competition.
