Passerby rescues dogs from Eden Prairie house fire

A garage fire could've gone from bad to devastating, if not for a passerby who was at the right place, at the right time.

A Eden Prairie fire likely started in the garage, according to authorities.

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. - A garage fire could've gone from bad to devastating, if not for a passerby who was at the right place, at the right time.

Eden Prairie Fire Chief George Esbensen said the man was on his way to a birthday party with his granddaughter on Pioneer Trail when they noticed flames coming from a home and called 911. The man then broke down the door to saved two dogs trapped inside the home.

Esbensen said the fire likely started in the garage, where they found a bunch of oily rags from some remodeling projects.

The fire may have been caused by some oily rags in the home's garage.

He said the homeowner wasn't home at the time of the fire and thanks to the quick-thinking Good Samaritan, the home suffered minimal damage.

The fire did destroy an electrical box on the side of the home, which may have led to a popping noise. Esbensen said other 911 callers thought the noise was fireworks.

The homeowner will be able to return to the home once the electricity is restored.

At this point, the Eden Prairie Fire Department is ruling the fire as accidental.
