HOUSTON - Houston police say several people have been shot at a strip mall in the southwest of the city and that officers shot the gunman.

Police said via Twitter Monday that an "active shooter at Weslayan & Bissonnet has been shot by our officers" and that there are no reports of other suspects "at this time."

Police say several people have been taken to the hospital but that they cannot provide details about how many were shot or the severity of their injuries.

Several ambulances and other emergency vehicles responded to the Randalls grocery store shopping center shortly before 7 a.m. HPD confirms that several people were injured when someone opened fire on moving traffic.

Police say the extent of the injuries and the exact number of victims is unknown. Views from Air 11 showed at least one person being loaded into an ambulance.

Rick Flanigan with the Houston Fire Department says ambulances transported at least 6 people from the scene.

Police confirm that officers tracked down and shot the suspect. There are unconfirmed reports the suspect was hiding behind a tree when the officer took him or her down. The suspect's vehicle was also possibly located nearby.

There are no reports that multiple suspects are involved in this incident, police confirm.

As of 7:45 a.m. the scene was still locked down with no traffic allowed on Weslayan south of Westpark.

Police also secured the nearby "The Oaks" apartments on Law Street due to concerns about the suspect's vehicle being parked nearby.

The shooting comes days after a shooting at a Washington state mall that left five people dead. On Sept. 17, a 20-year-old man stabbed 10 people at a Minnesota mall before being shot to death by an off-duty police officer.
