HUDSON, Wis — New polling in Wisconsin continues to show the battleground state as a virtual tie between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, as both campaigns compete for critical electoral votes that could tip the Electoral College.
The USA Today/Suffolk University poll released Monday showed Trump leading Harris 48% to 47%. That's not surprising, given that Trump won Wisconsin by roughly 23,000 votes in 2016 over Hillary Clinton and then lost to President Biden by a similar margin in 2020.
On Monday, both campaigns also dispatched their vice presidential candidates to the suburbs of Milwaukee for rallies. Gov. Tim Walz appeared in Waukesha (in addition to a separate stop in Manitowoc), while Senator JD Vance spoke to a crowd in Racine.
Neil Kraus, a professor of political science at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, said he expects yet another razor-thin margin in Wisconsin next week.
"For the Dems, it's going to come down a lot to turnout in Milwaukee and Madison, the two big cities, and to a lesser extent Green Bay and La Crosse," Kraus said. "For the Republicans, it's going to be what happens in small towns. But you have a lot of suburbs, though, where it's contested."
The candidates will be spending a lot of time in Wisconsin over the next week. This Wednesday, Harris will stop in Madison while Trump will appear with Brett Favre in Green Bay.
