ST PAUL, Minn. — Minnesota Sen. Erin Murphy will serve as the new leader of the Minnesota Senate DFL Caucus, just days before the start of the new session.

The selection, which was announced Tuesday at the State Capitol, comes after Sen. Kari Dziedzic (DFL-Minneapolis) said she was stepping down from the position after learning her cancer had returned.

“I am honored by the vote of my Senate colleagues, and I’m committed to working with all the members of the diverse DFL Caucus to serve the people of Minnesota wherever they live,” said Majority Leader Murphy in a press release. "In the coming months, following the example set by leader Dziedzic, we will continue our work building on what we accomplished in the 2023 legislative session to meet Minnesotans where they are at, and to improve their lives.”

Sen. Murphy, a Democrat from St. Paul, is in her second term with the Minnesota Senate after serving six terms in the Minnesota House. During that span, she spent two years (2013 and 2014) as House majority leader. In 2018, she launched a campaign for governor, where she went on to earn the DFL's endorsement at the annual convention. However, she went on to lose in the primary to now-Gov. Tim Walz.

The annual session begins Monday.
