MINNEAPOLIS — If it seems like election seasons extend through every season lately — that's because they do.
And this cycle is no different, as experts on every side of the aisle predict we're in for yet another round of intense political campaigning for the next several months.
So to help keep voters on track this year, we put together a timeline of key dates to plan for as we eye November's grand finale: the general election.
JANUARY
- 1/19: Early voting begins for the presidential primary. Voters can cast their ballots by mail or in person until March 4.
FEBRUARY
- 2/13: If you're opting to skip early voting, make sure you're registered to vote by this day to ensure a speedy visit to your polling place on presidential primary day.
- You can also check the status of your registration if you aren't sure.
SPECIAL ELECTIONS (2/13)
- Special Election Waseca County Commissioner District 3 (Vacancy)
- Special Election Wilkin County Commissioner District 3 (Vacancy)
- Special Election City of Columbia Heights (Question)
- School District Special Election ISD 578 - Pine City (Question)
MARCH
- 3/5: This day marks Super Tuesday/presidential primary day. Click here to view the candidates in the running for the White House and here to locate your polling place.
APRIL
SPECIAL ELECTIONS (4/9):
- Special Election City of Mounds View (Vacancy & Question)
- School District Special Election ISD 508 - St. Peter (Question)
JUNE
- 6/28: Starting June 28 through Aug. 12, Minnesotans can vote early by mail or in person for candidates running for local and state offices in November's primary election.
JULY
- 7/23: If you haven't registered to vote yet, this is your second reminder. Make sure you're signed up by July 23 to save yourself time on Election Day.
AUGUST
- 8/13: It's primary day! Head to your local polling place to cast your vote if you haven't already voted early.
SEPTEMBER
- 9/20: Things are really ramping up now! Starting today, you can vote early by mail or in person for your preferred candidates until Election Day, Nov. 4.
OCTOBER:
- 10/15: Third and final warning! If you aren't registered to vote, do so now and you'll be fully prepared for Election Day.
NOVEMBER:
- 11/5: Today's the day! If you couldn't get to your polling place or vote via mail early, click here to find out who made it to your final 2024 ballot, and see where you can show up to cast your vote.

Editor's note: With the Jan. 10 announcement of Rep. Kurt Daudt's (R-Crown) resignation, Gov. Tim Walz will issue a writ of special election to fill the open seat in House District 27B, the date of which is still forthcoming.
