MILWAUKEE — Deputies with the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office are in Wisconsin this week helping with security for the Republican National Convention

The RNC kicked off Monday and goes for the next four days in Milwaukee. It comes after an attempted assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, who has officially become the Republican presidential nominee.

Hennepin County Sheriff Dawanna Witt said in a social media post that this weekend's incident is another in a pattern "that shows how threatened our democratic institutions are by vitriol - vitriol we have become increasingly desensitized to."

Officials with the sheriff's office said 11 Hennepin County deputies will be at the convention for the entirety of the event. Deputies have been called on "frequently to provide security for elected officials who have faced increasingly serious and credible threats," Sheriff Witt said.

"No matter your political affiliation, there is no political end in this country that is justified by violent means," Sheriff Watt said.

Bloomington Police also shared on X their department has officers helping with RNC event security.

The RNC goes through Thursday, with event officials saying 50,000 guests are anticipated to attend.
