MN DFL and GOP gear up for final stretch

Both the DFL and the GOP had various canvassing events this weekend.

MINNEAPOLIS — Political candidates are moving full steam ahead as the presidential election is just weeks away now, nationally and locally.

Throughout the weekend both the GOP and the DFL had multiple canvassing events throughout the state, to not only raise awareness of presidential candidates, but local candidates as well.

NBC News' latest poll shows presidential candidates are in a dead heat.

Larry Jacobs, University of Minnesota political science professor says its all hands on deck during this final stretch.

"There's a massive effort," said Jacobs. "Door knocking, phone calls and social media, to try to re energize, remobilize, and get turnout."

Jacobs says Democrats are trying to inspire young voters to the polls, while Republicans are trying to convince more women to vote for Donald Trump. He says there's also big focus on local elections at these canvassing events.

"There's going to be a close race in Minnesota, particularly in the Minnesota House," said Jacobs. "That could be decided by a few dozen votes, that could make a difference in whether the DFL has a trifecta."

Both Democrats and Republicans say they will have to push until the finish line is crossed.
