ST PAUL, Minn — Quickly after the news that President Joe Biden would not seek the Democratic nomination for president, and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, people began opening their wallets and donating.
According to the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, donors began "flooding" the party with small donations before they sent a fundraising email or text message about the news.
DLF officials said in a media release that more than $100,000 was raised in 24 hours, which is the strongest fundraising period in party history.
The Associated Press reports that Harris' team raised $81 million in the 24-hour period after Biden's announcement Sunday, which represents the largest 24-hour sum reported by either side in the 2024 campaign.
Former President Donald Trump has also seen significant fundraising after newsworthy moments of the campaign. For instance after being booked in the Fulton County Jail in October 2023, Trump's campaign raised more than $7 million, the Associated Press reported.
The Biden campaign formally changed its name to Harris for President after the Sunday announcement that President Biden would not seek reelection amid calls for him to drop out by other Democrats following a poor debate performance against Former President Trump.
