ST PAUL, Minn. — A Minnesota congresswoman is the latest to encourage President Joe Biden to step aside and have Vice President Kamala Harris take his place in the presidential race. She also says Governor Tim Walz would make a good running mate to Harris.
Rep. Betty McCollum (D-Minnesota) shared a statement Friday saying in part "winning in November and defeating (Donald) Trump’s dangerous, hate-filled agenda must be Democrats’ sole focus."
Rep. McCollum then called upon President Biden to release his delegates to empower Vice President Harris to step forward as the Democratic nominee.
The statement comes the day after former President Trump accepted the Republican nomination.
President Biden has been resisting pressure from his party to step aside after a poor debate performance. The Associated Press on Friday reported a new poll from the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research shows a majority of Democrats think Vice President Harris would make a good president herself.
"If she becomes our Democratic nominee, Vice-President Harris will need a strong Midwestern running-mate and I encourage her and the Democratic delegates to consider a successful leader who has been a teacher, soldier, football coach, former-member of Congress, and a proven winner – Minnesota’s Governor Tim Walz," Rep. McCollum said in the statement.
Fellow Minnesota Rep. Angie Craig (D-Minnesota) has also called for Biden to step aside, along with other Democratic Representatives. NBC News reports Friday that four more House Democrats have issued a joint statement calling on Biden to step aside, saying they are concerned about his age and fitness. This, as Biden recovers from Covid-19 in Delaware.
