Undocumented immigrants 'cannot' vote in Minnesota

While undocumented immigrants can vote in some municipalities across the United States, they can't in the state of Minnesota.

ST PAUL, Minn. — With another presidential election season right around the corner, Americans from coast to coast will soon be inundated with calls to register to vote.

In the U.S., you have to be 18 years old and a citizen to vote in state and federal elections, but as a recent VERIFY article pointed out, some municipalities allow undocumented immigrants to vote in local elections.

While the headline and article contain accurate information, the bottom line is that none of those municipalities are in Minnesota.

The Minnesota Secretary of State's Office reached out to KARE 11 to clarify that undocumented immigrants cannot cast a ballot in Minnesota, where to vote in any election – local, state, or federal – a voter must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old, a resident of Minnesota for 20 days, and not currently incarcerated for a felony conviction.

"This is of particular concern to our office because with the new Driver’s License for All Bill, there is a misconception that this will allow undocumented people to vote," wrote Cassondra Knudson of the Minnesota Secretary of State's Office. "That is not true, it is still a requirement that voters be U.S. citizens."
