GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. — With Minnesota’s presidential primary just a few weeks away, you’re about to see a serious ramp up in political advertising.
Minnesota is one of 14 states holding primaries on March 3, 2020, also known as Super Tuesday. Giselle Ugarte, Marketing Director of Media Bridge Advertising, says this could be the busiest election cycle ever for political ads and not just for television. Social media will be flooded too.
Experts say the latest numbers show nearly $1 billion was spent on political ads last year, including about $350 million for the presidential primary. That’s more than the same period during the 2016 election cycle. "It’s only going to go up from there and that includes Super Bowl 54,!" Ugarte said. Both President Trump and Democratic Presidential hopeful billionaire Mike Bloomberg have already purchased ads this year at a cost of about $10 million each.
Ugarte stopped by KARE 11 News at 11 to explain the rules in place to make sure candidates get equal opportunity for airtime. She also offers a warning for anyone planning on buying their own ads leading up to the election.
