Potholes popping up with January freeze-thaw cycle

The City of Minneapolis has received more than 120 pothole requests in January.

MINNEAPOLIS — It's still January, but it sure doesn't feel like it with some milder temperatures and also those craters out on the roads.

"There's a lot right around here," said one driver along Royalston Avenue in Minneapolis. "There was one a small child might have got lost in."

Pothole season seems to have come early thanks to the freeze-thaw cycle.

The City of Minneapolis has received more than 120 pothole requests during the month of January so far.

That means repair shops are busy.

"It's Minnesota man, we got to deal with it," said Allen Russell at Tires Plus in New Hope.

He says he's getting cars in with all sorts of damage caused by potholes. Repairs that can cost hundreds of dollars.

"Busted tires, then your rim control arms, ball joints," said Russell.

That includes Jackson Kisling who is getting his tires replaced.

"I have a nail in one of the my tires and then the potholes are doing a number on the rest of them," said Kisling.

A MnDOT Spokesperson says they have been patching potholes when they have the time in between snowstorms.

A City of Minneapolis spokesperson says for the most part crews are currently focused more on snow and ice removal and not pothole repairs. Permanent patches are made in the spring when warmer temperatures make that possible.
