An ambulance races to respond to the scene of an emergency.

WATKINS, Minn. — A farmer died this weekend after he was accidentally run over by the tractor he was riding during harvest time.

Shortly after 1 p.m. Sunday, the Stearns County Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call reporting that a man had been run over by a tractor in Luxemburg Township, north of the city of Watkins.

When Stearns County deputies arrived, they found Matthew Mathies, 59, of Watkins, lying on his side in the yard.

Police said Mathies had been trying to hook a wagon to the rear of his tractor and corn picker combo when the tractor began to roll down a slight slope.

Officials said Mathies tried to jump onto the tractor to prevent it from rolling but slipped and was run over by the tractor.

Emergency workers and the deputies provided medical aid for Mathies, but he died at the scene from his injuries.
