CROW WING COUNTY, Minn. — An 81-year-old man is dead after he crashed his powered parachute in Crow Wing County.

The Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office said Wayne Kyar was piloting a paramotor or powered parachute on Sept. 11 when he crashed into a tree.

Deputies were notified of the crash around 6:30 p.m. and responded to the North Central Speedway in Crow Wing Township.

A witness said the paramotor seemed to have a mechanical failure and Kyar glided into a tree as he was losing altitude. Kyar then fell from the paramotor at a height of 50 feet, according to the news release.

Paramedics performed life-saving measures on Kyar, but "he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased by paramedics at approximately 7:16 pm."
