CLOQUET, Minn. — Police in Cloquet found and arrested a man accused of killing a 27-year-old woman and her 18-month-old son after an extensive manhunt.
According to a social media post from the Cloquet Police Department, authorities located and arrested Sheldon James Thompson at 8:43 p.m. Sunday night.
Police say Thompson was found in a wooded area off Mission Road in Perch Lake Township in Carlton County on the Fond du Lac Reservation. He was taken into custody with help from a Minnesota State Patrol helicopter and a K-9 from the Carlton County Sheriff’s Office.
Thompson was treated for temperature-related issues when he was found. Officials say he was cleared from a local hospital and booked into the Carlton County Jail on two counts of second degree-homicide.
No weapons were found on Thompson when he was arrested. Formal charges are pending by the Carlton County Attorney’s Office.
Police in northern Minnesota alerted residents that they were searching for an "armed and dangerous" man after a mother and child were found dead inside a home Sunday morning.
A citizen called police Saturday afternoon and requested a welfare check on a woman and child "in the City of Cloquet on the Fond du Lac Indian Reservation," according to a news release.
Officers checked the home "but were unable to contact or see anyone inside."
Police got a search warrant on Sunday and officers found the bodies of a 27-year-old woman and an 18-month-old boy inside the house, located in the 1600 block of Locke Lane.
Police say Thompson and the victims "had a relationship or otherwise knew each other."
The names of the woman and toddler are being withheld until the family is notified.
