Shakopee man and officer involved in fatal shooting identified

The man died of multiple gunshot wounds, according to a press release.

SHAKOPEE, Minn. The BCA has identified the Shakopee police officer who fired his weapon in a fatal officer-involved shooting, and the man who died was identified by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner.

The officer has been identified as Officer Thor Carlson and has been with the Shakopee Police Department for 12 years, according to the BCA. He is currently on standard administrative leave.

The man who died in the officer-involved shooting is identified as as 61-year-old James Hanchett by a press release from the Hennepin County Medical Examiner.

Officers were responding to a fire alarm at a home near the Minnesota Women's Prison Nov 9. when they arrived to the house they saw Hanchett pointing a handgun at an officer, police said.

The officer shot Hanchett who later died at the hospital, police said.

Hanchett died of multiple gunshot wounds, according to the press release.
