MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. --
The International Space Station turns 15-years-old on Tuesday and to celebrate the occasion KARE 11 Sunrise took some time to chat with Minneapolis native, and astronaut, Bob Cabana via Skype.
Cabana was commander of the shuttle mission Endeavour which was responsible for linking the first pieces of the ISS together.
He still recalls the day with glee when he talks about the effort of making it a true international mission.
"When we entered everybody asked who is going to be the first one inside and I wouldn't tell anyone on that day, even the crew didn't know. I pulled Sergei Krikalev (Russian crewmate) and we entered all the hatches for all the modules side by side because it was an international station and I felt it was important that we enter as an international team," Cabana said.
To date the station has been used many times to test spacecraft systems and equipment and well as conduct experiments in biology, physics and astronomy.
Cabana we born and raised in Minneapolis and is a 1967 graduate of Washburn High School.
