St. Paul man rescued from burning home is in fair condition

St. Paul firefighters say the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

A St. Paul man is recovering in the hospital with severe burns after a fire destroyed his home Saturday.

Crews demolished the home late Saturday night. Neighbors stopped by all day on Sunday.

"Hope everyone is OK," said one neighbor.

"Hoping he got out and is safe," another said.

Neighbors say Michael Schultz lived at the home on the corner of Hall Avenue and Baker Street. Everbody knew him as Sarge.

"Sarge has been here forever," said Ricardo Rodriguez. "Come back with nothing, that's going to hurt, but you know what, at least he's still here."

Other neighbors, like Tom Mahowald, are emotional thinking about what Schultz lost.

"He would help you," said Mahowald.

"It's a shame," said Steve Willems, who used to visit Schultz often. "Well liked in the neighborhood, he's a handyman. Good with motors. He's worked on automobiles."

The home is now gone and neighbors are wondering what they can do to help.

"I'm glad he's still here," said Rodriguez. "Hope he pulls through it."

A GoFundMe has been set up to help Schultz.
