GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. — It wasn't even close.
A powerful winter storm system that roared into the Twin Cities just after 3 a.m. Wednesday has easily shattered a February snow record that stood for 57 years.
That 1962 record was officially broken at 10 a.m., when a 4.5 inch snow total was posted at MSP International airport. That pushed the total of snow that has fallen today past the 26.5 inch previous record, and the precip keeps piling up. As of 12:30 p.m. MSP International registered 7.8 inches, bringing the metro monthly total for February of 2019 to 30.4 inches, with 8 days and at least one predicted storm still ahead.
KARE 11 meteorologist Sven Sundgaard says not only does this snow-filled month set a new February record, it also earns a spot on the top ten snowiest months in modern state history.
- 46.9" Nov 1991
- 46.4" Jan 1982
- 40.0" Mar 1950
- 37.1" Mar 1965
- 36.8" Mar 1985
- 35.3" Jan 1967
- 33.6" Dec 2010
- 33.2” Dec 1969
- 33.1” Jan 1999
- 30.4” Feb 2019 (so far)
The snowiest month in state history should come as no surprise... that would be November of 1991, a month that brought 46.9 inches, largely due to the tail end of the legendary Halloween Blizzard.
Sven adds that this is now the snowiest month in more than eight years, with the last month to top 30 inches of snow dating back to December of 2010. Remember that one... we got so much that the roof of the Metrodome collapsed.
