Timeline of events in Alayna Ertl abduction, murder

As the investigation continues into the abduction and murder of 5-year-old Alayna Ertl, it seems there are more questions than answers.

WATKINS, Minn. - As the investigation continues into the abduction and murder of 5-year-old Alayna Ertl, it seems there are more questions than answers.

Authorities say they believe they have the man responsible behind bars, however investigators continue to look into the details of what exactly happened on the day of her disappearance -- a day that eventually led to a statewide Amber Alert and the involvement of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

Charges against the suspect are expected Tuesday. He's scheduled to appear in court at 11:30 a.m.

The BCA said no investigation is the same and in this case, there was plenty of confusion surrounding where the young girl was and if she had been abducted.

Here's a rough timeline of what happened:

Saturday, Aug. 20

2 a.m.: Ertl's parents told authorities they put her in bed at this time. They also said the suspect in her disappearance and murder spent the night at their home.

8 a.m.: The family notices Ertl and the suspect are gone. Her father's GMC Sierra truck and his cell phone, which was inside the truck, are also missing.

10 a.m.: The family contacted law enforcement to file a missing person report. Local law enforcement began canvassing the area, searching for the missing girl. Efforts are also made to contact the cell phone provider to locate the suspect.

11:15 a.m.: The Meeker County Sheriff's Office contacts the BCA to assist with the investigation. Sheriff's deputies and BCA agents continue to canvass the area and local businesses. Surveillance video is reviewed for signs of Ertl.

1:12 p.m.: An Amber Alert is issued after video surveillance and leads do not result in either Ertl or the suspect being located.

Hours later, the GMC truck is found on property owned by the suspect's family in rural Cass County. Authorities do not locate anyone inside the truck or inside a cabin on the property.

4:24 p.m.: The suspect, identified as a family friend and a co-worker of Ertl's father, is found by K-9 officers in a wooded area about a quarter of a mile from the cabin, on his family's property near Motley.

Authorities say the suspect did not try to flee, was not armed and did not resist arrest.

The suspect then gave authorities enough information for them to discover Ertl's body in a swampy area, a few hundred yards from the cabin. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Ramsey County Medical Examiner released a preliminary autopsy report saying the girl died of "homicidal violence."

The investigation is still active and ongoing.

A visitation for Alayna Ertl has been planned for Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Ertl Funeral Home in Watkins. The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony Church in Watkins.

A GoFundMe account was set up to "ease some of the family's burdens they are experiencing as they deal with this tremendous loss."

The BCA issues an Amber Alert when a child is suspected of being abducted and when that child's life or wellbeing is in danger. For more information about Amber Alert activations, click here.
