World Refugee Day, dedicated to raising awareness

The American Refugee Committee once again hosted the World Refugee Day 5k in the Nakivale Refugee Settlement in southwest Uganda.

NAKIVALE, Uganda — Dozens of Minnesotans marked World Refugee Day Wednesday by running a race 8,000 miles from their home.

The American Refugee Committee once again hosted the World Refugee Day 5k in the Nakivale Refugee Settlement in southwest Uganda. About 1,000 people participated in the event, including about 30 Minnesotans who traveled to the East African country to raise awareness and show support for the Minnesota-based organization.

Uganda itself has a population of 40 million people and hosts 1.2 million refugees. The country also allows refugees the option of leaving their settlements.
