You can feed giraffes at Como Zoo

Starting this Saturday, you can feed a giraffe at the Como Zoo

ST. PAUL - I fed a giraffe today! How many times have you been able to say this? At the Como Zoo now you can do just that.

Starting this Saturday, you can get up to their level and feed them a piece of romaine lettuce.

"Our giraffe are the gentle giant of the animal world, they are really a very peaceful animal," said Adam Nigon, a zookeeper at the Como Zoo.

Zookeepers say that the romaine lettuce is a treat for the giraffes. When we are not feeding them, they stick to a healthy diet.

"They eat a mixture of alfalfa and hay. And they also get food pellets in the evening. It has all of the vitamins and minerals that they need," said Adam.

This new area was funded by the non-profit group Como Friends.

Adding this platform also let the giraffes make some new friends.

"When they built the platform, they were able to expand the exhibit...so we were finally able to take out that middle fence, let them interact with each other which has been really nice," said Adam.

Remember the baby giraffe last fall?

Eight-month-old Francis is now nine feet tall and still a little shy.

You can feed the giraffes starting on Saturday for 5 bucks.
