MINNEAPOLIS — General Mills’ Box Tops for Education program is offering new ways for people to earn cash for schools in need.

According to the National Education Association, the average teacher spends more than $500 of their own money to buy supplies for their classroom because of a lack of adequate funding, with higher expenses on average in high-poverty schools.

Earlier this year, Box Tops for Education made a 4-year, $500,000 commitment to Black Men Teach Twin Cities, a Minnesota-based organization that works toward recruiting, preparing, placing, and retaining Black men as teachers in Twin Cities area elementary schools. This partnership is just one piece of the Box Tops journey to advance racial equity in education – starting in the Minneapolis community.

“We understand that addressing systemic racism isn’t something that we can do alone – but as a platform with a 25-year, and nearly $1 Billion history of helping schools, we believe there is always more we can be doing, especially in our own community,” says Lilly Moeding, Box Tops for Education’s Brand Experience Manager. “Working with local organizations like Black Men Teach has allowed us to begin our journey toward making an impact in our own backyard of Minneapolis.”

At a back-to-school event last weekend, Box Tops also donated $500 Target gift cards to three teachers, all fellows with Black Men Teach, from Monroe Elementary in Brooklyn Park, to get school and classroom supplies for the upcoming year. Box Tops also donated $25 Target gift cards to the parents of each of their students.

“We are so grateful to Box Tops for Education and Black Men Teach for this amazing event and support,” said Sidney McClain, one of the three Black Men Teach fellows. “Knowing we can start this school year off without financial stress is such a relief. From being able to afford classroom supplies for our students to the incredible loan forgiveness – it’s life-changing and makes such an impact on not only our lives, but also our community at large.”
