MINNEAPOLIS — It's not everyday you see a line in front of a bar before noon on a Friday. But this is a special occasion.
A Bar of Their Own opened its doors Friday. It's the only bar in Minnesota dedicated to women's sports.
After one last hug from her mother, Joyce Aarsvold, owner Jillian Hiscock stepped up to the mound. Just before noon, she threw the ceremonial first pitch before letting the first customers in.
"It's a bit overwhelming, but good!" Hiscock said as she held open the door for customers. "Overwhelming, but good!"
It didn't even take a half-hour for people to start adding their names to the waiting list. Many of them were women who, legitimately, had to start a league of their own to even play ball.
"I played hockey in high school," said Colleen Woodley. "First we started with magazines taped on our shins. Pretty soon the boys said you can’t play. This is a comfortable feeling of pride."
In "A League of Their Own," the movie that inspired the bar's name, Tom Hanks' character Jimmy Dugan famously said "there's no crying in baseball."
"Happy tears are okay," laughed Hiscock.
"This is Jill," said Aarsvold, pointing around the bar. "She's got the love in her heart and the people to support her. Because she is always there for them everybody else."
A Bar of Their Own is open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, and will exclusively be playing women's sports.
