CHASKA, Minn. — Scrambled eggs and oatmeal have been on the pregame dinner menu for Cole Nicholson since he broke the Chaska High School boys single-game scoring record on Jan. 15.
The senior captain scored 51 points in Chaska’s 82-69 win over Robbinsdale Cooper shattering the previous record of 49 points that had stood since 1956.
“It’s something that he can brag about for a number of years,” said Chaska head coach Dana Kallman.
Nicholson didn’t know that he was on pace for the record until a teammate told him during a timeout to score 6 more points. “I started figuring it out and then everyone started cheering super loud every time I would score and it just seemed that I was getting closer. I scored a bucket at the end that I usually wouldn’t take but it was for the record, so I kind of had to,” he said.
Kallman wasn’t surprised by Nicholson’s dominating performance. “He’s the kind of kid that comes in before school and shoots on the machine. He comes in during the summer and shoots, so hard work does pay off."
Nicholson earned a basketball scholarship and will play next fall at the University of Northern Colorado.
