Report: Gophers defensive coordinator leaving for position with Michigan State

The Gophers haven't formally announced the move yet, but if things go through it would mark a major loss for P.J Fleck's program.

MINNEAPOLIS — Following a disappointing season, the Minnesota Golden Gophers could be searching for a new defensive coordinator.

The Gophers DC, Joe Rossi, is heading to Michigan State, according to ESPN writer Pete Thamel.

The Gophers haven't formally announced the move yet, but if it goes through would represent a major loss for the university.

Rossi has been the team's defensive coordinator since 2018 and was nominated for the Broyles Award, which is presented to the best assistant coach in college football, in 2021.

Another measure of Rossi's success is the eight NFL draft picks that have come from the program under his watch, a list that includes Antoine Winfield Jr., Boye Mafe, Esezi Otomewo and Benjamin St-Juste, among others.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
