Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Their teams won national titles, and now Brittney Griner and Anthony Davis share something else in common.
Griner captured the John R. Wooden Award on Friday night, three days after she led Baylor to a win over Notre Dame in the title game and the first 40-0 season in college basketball history -- men's or women's.
Davis had already been named the winner of the men's award on Saturday, two days before he helped Kentucky beat Kansas for the national championship. He accepted it Friday at the Los Angeles Athletic Club.
Baylor assistant coach Damion McKinney accepted the award on Griner's behalf because the 6-foot-8 junior star had academic obligations after spending the last month on the road playing in the Big 12 and NCAA Tournaments.
In a statement, she called winning the award "one of the most cherished moments of my athletic career, and most humbling."
"I want to thank the nationwide voters and the Los Angeles Athletic Club for this prestigious award, as well as my coaches, teammates, and especially my mom and dad, for without all of them, this would not be possible," she said.
Griner, in just three seasons, is the first NCAA player to score 2,000 points and block 500 shots and, like Davis, has hogged most of the top awards for her sport.
Davis was just the second freshman to win the award after Kevin Durant and was the first player from Kentucky or the SEC to get it.
Among his other achievements in a star-making freshman season, Davis was the Naismith Trophy winner and SEC Player of the Year. Griner won the Naismith as well.
