BRAINERD, Minn. - A bantam hockey player died Friday while playing at a tournament in Brainerd, according to authorities.

Emergency medical workers and first responders were called to the Brainerd Area Civic Center on reports of a young hockey player who had "gone unconscious" during a game, according to a news release from the Brainerd Police Department.

Around 4:25 p.m., a paramedic gave the 14-year-old boy first aid and CPR. The boy was taken by air ambulance to a Brainerd hospital, but attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. Authorities do not know the cause of death.

On Saturday morning, the Eastview Hockey Association identified the player on their website as Patrick Schoonover, a Bantam AA player. They also posted the following statement from the Schoonover family:

"We lost our son Patrick last night. He passed away unexpectedly playing the game he loved so much. We appreciate the outpouring of support from the Eastview and MN hockey communities to our family. We want to thank his coach, first responders and the staff at St. Joseph's for doing everything they could to help Patrick and for providing comfort to our family. We appreciate all of you."

The Eastview Hockey Association and District 196 made support services available Saturday at EVHS Media Center for grieving families, players, students and friends.

Patrick's father, Mike, is a member of the Eastview Hockey Association Board. The family and school officials have asked for privacy, but did say they appreciate the support they've received.

"Many have already asked about what can be done to support the family as well as honor Patrick going forward. There will be much more information coming about plans at the EVHA level, but the Bantam AA team has asked to share the theme of 'Play for Patrick,'" according to the Eastview Hockey Association.

The Minnesota Wild also released a statement saying, "The Minnesota Wild joins the State of Hockey in mourning the tragic passing of a Bantam hockey player today in Brainerd. Our hearts and prayers go out to the player's family, friends and teammates."
