Twins call up Larnach, option Wallner to AAA St. Paul

Minnesota native Wallner has struggled to start the 2024 MLB season with just two hits in 25 at-bats.

MINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota Twins are looking to bolster their struggling offense by making a change in the outfield.

The team announced Tuesday it was optioning Matt Wallner to AAA St. Paul and calling up Trevor Larnach to take his place in the big league dugout.

Wallner, 26, has struggled to start the 2024 MLB season, notching just two hits in 25 at-bats for an average below .100 (.080). The Forest Lake native has a .231 career batting average after making his MLB debut with the Twins in September 2022.

Larnach's call-up marks a return to the big leagues after starting the year on a rehab assignment in Ft. Myers. The 2019 first-round draft pick has played portions of the past three seasons with the Twins, collecting a .222 career batting average with 20 home runs and 86 RBIs.

The Twins roster has been devastated by injury just a few short weeks into the season, starting with third baseman Royce Lewis' opening-day leg injury. Additional names added to the injured list have included shortstop Carlos Correa and outfielder Max Kepler.
