Twins swap OF Nick Gordon for lefthanded reliever Steven Okert

The ballclub will enter 2024 with a new-look bullpen that now includes Okert, a 32-year-old lefthander who strikes out nearly 30% of the hitters he faces.

MINNEAPOLIS — The Twins continue to tweak the club's 2024 roster, sending versatile Nick Gordon to Miami in exchange for lefthanded reliever Steven Okert.

Okert, a 32-year-old veteran with 228 career appearances, appeared in 64 games last season, notching 73 strikeouts in just over 58 innings pitched. Okert strikes out nearly 30% of the hitters he faces. The Twins hope he will take the load off Caleb Thielbar, who at times was the team's only lefthanded bullpen option in 2023.

In exchange for Okert, the Twins sent the versatile Nick Gordon to the Marlins. Gordon, who was the fifth-overall pick in the 2014 draft, missed all but 34 games of the 2023 season with a broken leg. In parts of three seasons with the Twins major league club, Gordon hit .250 with 42 doubles, six triples, 15 home runs and 80 RBI. He played outfield, second base and shortstop, giving Twins manager Rocco Baldelli plenty of options while filling out the lineup card.

The Twins officially kick off the 2024 season this Wednesday, when pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training at the club's facility in Fort Myers. Position players report on Sunday, Feb. 18.
