MINNEAPOLIS - Move over man caves. There was a time not a long ago Darin Blume had a finished basement, but his three kids thought that it was boring.
"I was talking to my dad, and he was thinking about getting one," Carson Blume said. "But my mom was kind of on the dark side."
"I know having a bar in the basement would be fun, honey," Darin said. "But we have kids that enjoy skating. They're going to be in the house 10 to 12 years. I'm sure they'll get lots use of it."
With his wife finally on board – Blume's basement transformed into a 300 square foot rink complete with synthetic ice.
"Of course it's not the real thing, but it's very similar," Blume said.
But it's not just Blume's boys lacing up the skates in the basement; it's becoming the neighborhood hot spot.
"We're okay with that," Blume said. "That's why we did it."
And it has been just as fun for dad
"He gets to watch us, and I think he likes that," Carson said.
So much... Blume actually built the rink with that in mind.
"I figured I'd like to have netting here instead of a solid wall so kids and friends and parents who are over can see what's going on in the rink here," Blume said. "The netting is actually from our trampoline."
It gives "bouncing off the walls" new meaning.
