A Cinderella season for the Minnesota Timberwolves may have just turned into a pumpkin with reports that big man Karl-Anthony Towns will be out indefinitely after tearing a meniscus in his left knee.
The Athletic NBA beat writer Shams Charania posted the news on his X (Twitter) account Thursday morning, sharing that sources tell him Towns has been gathering second opinions on the injury over the last 24 hours.
Timberwolves officials have not yet confirmed the injury.
It comes at a terrible time for Minnesota, as the club is in the midst of a breakthrough season that currently has them with a record of 43-19, good for a number-one seed if the playoffs were to start today.
After what amounted to a lost season in 2022-23 due to injuries, Towns has rebounded with an All-Star caliber effort, averaging more than 22 points and 8 rebounds over 60 games, and is shooting 42.3% from three-point range. As important is that he has jelled with fellow big man Rudy Gobert and guard Anthony Edwards to elevate the Wolves to the top of the NBA.
The club is currently tied with the Oklahoma City Thunder for the top spot in the NBA's Western Conference.
In a related move, the Timberwolves have signed former Phoenix Suns forward T.J. Warren to a 10-day contract. Warren has played in 374 games during his NBA career (236 starts), averaging 14.6 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.2 assists while averaging just over 27 minutes per game.
