BEREA, Ohio — When it rains, it pours.
Minnesota Vikings receiver Jordan Addison was carted off the field Wednesday while trying to make a catch during the team's joint practice with the Cleveland Browns. According to the Associated Press, Addison injured his ankle trying to make a catch against Cleveland's first-team defense when he landed awkwardly.
The injury came just hours after O'Connell announced that rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy would miss the remainder of the season after having surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right leg.
Following practice, Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell said he doesn't believe the injury is serious.
“We’ll make sure we go through all the processes and get some pictures of really knowing exactly what it is,” O'Connell said. “But I think he’s going to be all right. You hate to see that, especially early in the practice like it was.”
O'Connell said he doesn't expect Addison to participate in practice on Thursday.
“I know we’re going to evaluate him,” he said. “I don’t believe it to be something that’s going to allow him to practice tomorrow. But I also am hopeful to get some good news on kind of what that timeline looks like. I just have no idea.”
Addison is coming off a promising rookie season where he hauled in 70 catches for 911 yards and 10 touchdowns. He developed into a reliable receiver while star wideout Justin Jefferson missed time with a hamstring injury.
Off the field, Addison was recently charged with two misdemeanors after being arrested on July 12 on suspicion of driving under the influence. According to officials, officers found him asleep behind the wheel on an interstate near Los Angeles International Airport. As a result, Addison could be suspended for three games, however, the league has yet to issue any sort of punishment.
