MINNEAPOLIS — One of the greatest running backs in Gophers history is making his way back to Minnesota.
The Vikings announced Thursday they have signed former University of Minnesota RB Mo Ibrahim to the team roster.
It should be a happy homecoming for a player whose young NFL career has been derailed by injuries so far. Ibrahim initially signed with the Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent in 2023 but a preseason injury kept him on the sidelines until he rejoined the Lions practice squad in October.
Ibrahim was elevated for the Lions game against the Baltimore Ravens on Oct. 22 but unfortunately suffered a hip dislocation on his one kickoff return.
His UMN career was record-breaking, to say the least. Ibrahim carried the Gophers to multiple successful seasons, highlighted by his performance in 2022. That season, Ibrahim racked up 1,665 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns, averaging 153.7 yards per game.
Ibrahim holds multiple Gophers records, including for rushing yards (4,668), total touchdowns (53) and 100-yard games (24).
How long he remains with the Vikings is yet to be seen as the team's running back room currently houses Aaron Jones, Ty Chandler, Kene Nwangu, Myles Gaskin and DeWayne McBride.
The Vikings also signed one of Ibrahim's teammates from the 2022 Gophers season, offensive lineman Chuck Filiaga. Filiaga most recently played for the UFL's San Antonio Brahmas, where he started seven of 10 games this spring, according to the Vikings.
To make room for Ibrahim and Filiaga, Minnesota waived tight end Trey Knox and cornerback Jacobi Francis.
