Olympic swimmer, MN native Regan Smith talks winning gold — & what's next

Smith won two golds and three silvers this year, bringing her grand Olympic medal total to eight.

LAKEVILLE, Minn. — Lakeville native Regan Smith is back in town for the first time since winning five medals last month at the Paris Games.

Smith won two golds and three silvers this year, bringing her grand Olympic medal total to eight, the product of two rounds of the Summer Games, Tokyo 2020 preceding the competition in Paris.

Smith was at her alma mater, Lakeville North, Tuesday afternoon, where she spoke with students about her Paris experience and offered advice for those who want to follow in her footsteps.

Following her Lakeville North masterclass in winning, Smith sat down with KARE 11's Will Hall, who asked her what winning her first gold in Paris meant to her.

"It means a lot, and to do it on the very last event of the entire competition was very special," she said. "We went out with a bang — big time."

So, will we see Regan go for gold again at Los Angeles' 2028 Summer Games?

"I'm so excited for the opportunity to compete on a home field," she said. "Now, granted, there's a lot that can change between now and then — like who knows where I'll be when I'm 26? But thinking about that possibility is incredible.

"And having it be in SoFi Stadium, that would be crazy, and I want to be there, and I want to be a part of it."
