PARIS, France — On the heels of the Opening Ceremony, many are wondering if one of the fan favorites from the U.S. Olympic gymnastics trials has joined the team in Paris.

Beacon, the 4-year-old golden retriever therapy dog, went viral for being the "Goodest Boy" at the trials in Minneapolis, offering comfort and support for the U.S. gymnastics team throughout weekend.

Several gymnasts were seen with the pup, including St. Paul native Suni Lee, who posted a photo on Instagram with the caption, "thank god for beacon. day 1 of trials done, onto day 2."

It's unclear, however, if Beacon will be in Paris with the gymnasts.

"We are looking into if he can go to Paris," a USAG representative said in a statement to PEOPLE earlier this month. "As you can imagine, it's a bit complicated."

Studies have shown the effects animals can have on people's mental health. According to a survey conducted by the Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI) found that 74% of pet owners reported mental health improvement from their pets.

During the Olympic trials at the Target Center, Beacon's handler, Tracey Callahan Molnar, said the pup helps provide comfort for the gymnasts throughout the competition.

"I think it's a combination of joy and calm," Callahan Molnar said. "And for many of the gymnasts, it's just a nice distraction from the stress of high-level competition."

The men's U.S. gymnastics team opens competition Saturday morning at 4 a.m. (NBC), so if Beacon made the trip, there's a good bet he'll be hanging with the gymnasts.
