Journey to Paris | Shane Wiskus

The Spring Park native was part of the core men's team back in Tokyo's 2020 Games, but was not selected to the five-man U.S. Men's Olympic Gymnastics team for 2024.

MINNEAPOLIS — Despite finishing third in the all-around competition at the USA men's gymnastics trials over the weekend...

"I had the best two days of competition of my life, so it's all I can do," said Olympic gymnast Shane Wiskus.

The Spring Park native was part of the core men's team back in Tokyo's 2020 Olympics, but was not selected to the five-man U.S. Men's Olympic Gymnastics team for 2024.

"You got to have that home run in your lineup, and Shane's got a lot of doubles and triples, but he just needed that one more home run to get over the hump," said former Gopher, Olympian and current NBC analyst John Roethlisberger.

Instead, the former Gopher will head to Paris as an alternate for the team.

"Yeah, I feel like I deserved it," said Wiskus.

That feeling was shared by many, including friends and family, who got the rare chance to watch him perform in-person during the trials at the Target Center.

"Having my team here, it means the world. Lot of family, a lot of friends out there. I just hope I made them proud. It was a helluva ride," said Wiskus.

A ride that will continue next month in Paris, and despite serving as an alternate for Team USA, heading to the second Olympics of his career is something the Mound Westonka High School grad can be proud about.

"You reflect on your journey to today, and having the opportunity to head back to the Olympics for the second time in your career, what are you most proud of? I think I am most proud of where I am now and where I've found myself mentally, sometimes you can be too hard on yourself and unnecessarily hard on yourself and I feel like I've landed in a place that's approaching the sport from a lens of gratitude," said Wiskus.
