Despite the win, Matt Wilkinson's top eligible time is short of the Olympic standard.

Minnesota has another hometown hero to root for in the upcoming Olympic games.

Matt Wilkinson took second in the 3000-meter steeplechase at the USA Trials on Sunday night, according to the University of Minnesota website. He hails from Greenwood and competed at Carlton College before transferring and graduating from the U of M.

Wilkinson snagged the roster spot on Team USA with his second-place victory, but he has not officially qualified for the team and his top eligible time is less than two seconds behind the Olympic standard, according to the U.

In his time at the University, Wilkinson set the second fastest times in the steeplechase and 5000 meters in program history. The steeplechase is a lengthy run (almost two miles) including various obstacles like hurdles and water jumps.
